Elle et moi

Elle et moi

Quebec dance-pop singer Marie-Mai found herself at a personal and professional crossroads after splitting from husband and longtime musical collaborator Fred St-Gelais in 2016. Two years later, she’s a new mother, in a new relationship, and rejuvenated musically. Her sixth album showcases Marie-Mai the singer-songwriter, with gusts of invigorating electronics from Berlin-based coproducer Oliver Som (Louise Attaque, James Blunt). On “Empire”, she stares down self-doubt as she stands on the edge of a new era, her smoky vocals accompanied by percolating synths and a gently thumping beat. She takes on haters in the tension-building “Assoiffés de pouvoir” and finds solace in sensuality on the atmospheric ballad “Trahison sur ma peau.” But the album’s defining moment comes on the strident title track as she sings, at first softly, then much louder, about herself in the third person: “I need her to be me.”
