“I can’t escape the feeling that the distance is growing,” sings Campbell Burns on Vacations’ 2023 single “Midwest”. Like so much of the Newcastle, New South Wales band’s third album, No Place Like Home, that track lingers on the emotional toll of leaving someone behind when you head out on tour. Burns’ plaintive singing and confessional lyrics are key to Vacations’ catchy yet poignant indie pop, as proven by the belated viral success of 2017’s “Young” and 2018’s “Telephones”. Both songs mine the uncertainty of everyday decisions over drowsy jangle, while subsequent material has ramped up the pace and borrowed flourishes from synth-pop and Americana alike. And though tour-inspired dislocation has become a recurring theme for Burns—observe his appeal for either the resolution or dissolution of a relationship on 2023’s “Next Exit”— his songwriting feels ever more universal is its mapping of tender turning points.
