Gyakie Essentials

Ghanaian singer-songwriter Gyakie deftly folds Twi, English and pidgin lyricism into her iteration of Afro-soul, which incorporates elements of highlife, hip-hop, reggae and R&B. The versatile singer born Jackline Acheampong is the daughter of highlife legend Nana Acheampong and draws inspiration both from her musical background and a fusion of eclectic sounds. A nod to her Caribbean influences, her electro-tinged reggae debut, “Love Is Pretty”, fits snugly alongside ToluDaDi’s dancehall-leaning “Faya” and the tropical dub of “Whine”. Pairing emotive vocals with hard-to-shake melodies, Gyakie excels over the Afrobeats sounds of “Forever” and rhythmic R&B of R2Bees’ “Need Your Love” whilst displaying her musical range on the trap-leaning, gospel-tinged “Nana Nyame” and amapiano “Focus On the Beat”.
