All-female trio Sao Sao Sao were a pop sensation in Thailand throughout the ‘80s, singing both in Thai and English. Beginning with their 1981 debut, the group's wistful, but strangely chirpy songs about love, loss, yearning, and pain soon made them a massive success, particularly among teens. Sao Sao Sao's early albums had an upbeat, earnest, and very Thai style, but they shifted towards Western pop later in the decade. Their popular Wham! covers from 1987 were telling—Sao Sao Sao was pure pop, smooth and saccharine.
