Nightmares on Wax Essentials

Nightmares on Wax helped invent the electronic style known as Sheffield Bleep, a cornerstone of the Warp label; its echo lingers in the chilly synths and clattering drums of "Aftermath" and "Dextrous". But he developed a more soulful, sample-heavy style on 1995's Smokers Delight and 1999's Carboot Soul: "Dreddoverboard" balances acid-jazz horns with springy drums; "Les nuits" turns easy listening lighter than air. On 2008's "195 lbs.", he pays tribute to Jamaican soundsystem culture, weaving Ricky Ranking's toasting over dubbed-out guitars and bleepy synths that bring his sound full circle.
