Dubbed The Magic Finger for his touch-tapping technique, virtuoso guitarist Balawan is pushing the boundaries of contemporary music in Indonesia. With roots in traditional Balinese music and jazz, he has developed a hybrid sound—an electrifying and near-psychedelic fusion of percussion-heavy Balinese gamelan, rock, blues and bluegrass. Having formed Batuan Ethnic Fusion in the ‘90s, Balawan has continued a trailblazing, modernising tradition alongside associated acts such as Trisum and Gamelan Maestro Project.
