Rai flourished in Algeria and the larger region because it spoke to the people. Distinguished for its bold lyrics and subject matter as well as Bedouin beats, rai is spread by modern troubadors like Rachid Taha who sing in Arabic and French—and now English and Spanish—as rai crosses more borders.
