Not every song MC5 unleashed was turbocharged proto-punk. The Detroit legends utilised blues rock's slowly rolling grooves and ragged sadness (“Miss X”) and free jazz's screaming atonality and sci-fi-inspired spirituality (“Starship”). They also turned back the clock to the '50s with their rollicking doo-wop reimagining of Chuck Berry's “Back in the USA”.
