Apple Music Home Session: Tate McRae

Not only did Calgary singer-songwriter Tate McRae come of age during the pandemic, but she also became one of its breakout stars. “I feel like from age 16 to 19 you evolve so much as a person,” she tells Apple Music. “I feel like I’m coming out on the other side as a full adult now. Because so much time has passed, my whole perspective has completely shifted. My values, what I care about, what I wanna talk about now is completely different than three years ago.” That maturity actually showed itself pretty early on, but it was only reinforced by her debut album, 2022’s i used to think i could fly—and she remade one of its songs, “go away”, as an acoustic number for her Apple Music Home Session. “It’s one of my personal favourites on my album,” she says. “It perfectly summarises my album, and I wanted to hear what it would sound like a little more stripped back and simple. When you take back all of the glitter and extra production around songs, it gives listeners a chance to just hone in on the lyrics and the meaning behind the song.” She took a similar tack with her Harry Styles cover. “I selected ‘As It Was’ not only because Harry is amazing, but his album was so special,” she adds. “Obviously, I don’t think any cover will come close to the original version of ‘As It Was’, but when you strip it down, you can hear how much depth is actually behind the poppy, indie feel.”
