Ska en Español Essentials

It wasn’t just the English-speaking punks and rockers who were excited by the twitchy, propulsive energy unleashed by UK ska revivalists like The Specials and The Selecter in the early ‘80s. Young musicians in Latin communities in U.S. cities and throughout Central and South America were equally eager to find out what happened when that old-school Jamaican rhythm collided with punk, rockabilly, salsa, cumbia and other sounds from far and wide. By the late ’80s and into the ‘90s, bands like Mexico’s Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Uruguay’s El Cuarteto de Nos and Argentina’s Los Auténticos Decadentes were scuffing up their two-tone shoes as they took Spanish-language music in fresh and unexpected directions. High-stepping, horn-loving successors such as Los Angeles’ La Resistencia continue to give ska a whole new vocabulary—in more ways than one.
