James Carter Essentials

On his early album Conversin' With the Elders, James Carter played works by bop innovator Charlie Parker and postmodern master Anthony Braxton. With his robust, joyful sound, he did justice to both jazz traditions, while also employing a group that included original World Saxophone Quartet member Hamiet Bluiett. Given that range, it's hardly a surprise that Bluiett eventually invited Carter to join his boundary-busting band on Yes We Can. This playlist is your guide to navigating the varied work of an artist who offers a modernism steeped in lessons acquired from past greats.
