In the mid-2000s, Flyleaf helped usher in a new generation of bands whose spiritually inclined alt-metal would find success on both the secular and sacred charts. Formed in Belton, Texas, in 2002, the group quickly notched a string of hits, including the 2007 smash “All Around Me”, that mould their Christian faith into universal ruminations on love and death, hope and despair. The beating heart of Flyleaf’s moving anthems is Lacey Sturm, a dynamic singer who sounds as if she’s wrestling with demons one minute yet dancing with angels the next. Sturm recorded three albums with the band before stepping away from the spotlight in 2012 to raise her family and eventually launch a solo career. She would, however, return to the fold in 2022 for a clutch of festival appearances tied to the re-release of their Platinum-selling debut, Flyleaf.
