Music coming from East Africa right now is vibrant and vivacious, and takes on many shapes and forms. Fusing global and homegrown elements, artists take nods from wider Afrobeat, hip-hop and R&B, while working in the local zeal of Kenyan benga, Tanzanian bongo flava and folkish melodies of Taarab—the latter aptly meaning "joy with music". This new East African wave is truly joyous indeed.
