About Clock

The British disco-techno outfit Clock were probably best-known for their mass-market cover songs, 1995's house-seasoned reading of Harold Faltermeyer's "Axel F." and 1997's somewhat electronic reworking of Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing." The brainchild of DJ/producer Stu Allan and Peter Pritchard, Clock had notably never gone for clubland credibility, focusing from their inception on pure dance-pop hits that tended to recycle wistful disco riffs and a light touch of acid house. After a Technotronic-like debut, "Holding On," featuring an overheated, temporary vocal performance by Ann Marie Smith, the band recruited dance teacher ODC MC, aka Marcus Thomas (Tzant, The Cool, The Fab & The Groovy), and a law student by the name of Tinka for permanent vocals and went on to release nearly a dozen Top 40 singles, as well as 1995's It's Time, 1997's About Time 2, 1999's Japan-only Boogie Stand, and a greatest-hits LP in early 2000. Stu Allan died on September 22, 2022, while in treatment for a rare form of stomach cancer; he was 60 years of age. ~ Dean Carlson
