From the '80s onward, Greek composer/pianist Yanni has probably been the most well-known artist under the new-age umbrella, but rather than making hushed ambient music, his sound is both bold and majestic. Yanni's epic sonic constructions have always embraced contrast, whether he's combining pulsing, modernistic electronics and operatic female vocals on the soaring "Aria," or blending sample-generated dulcimer tones with sweeping, classical-influenced orchestrations on folk-tinged tracks like "Acroyali/Standing In Motion."
