Like their math rock-inspired friends in fellow Japanese band mouse on the keys, post-rock outfit toe have developed their own distinct take on the genre’s motifs. That knotty interplay between the clean guitar, bass and drums is present—songs locking together like a sonic jigsaw, or slipping in and out of phase like a jazz improv group, or cohering into melody from a crash of sounds. But the formerly instrumental four-piece have since added vocals for a new dimension of texture, as on the delicate “Song Silly” and “After Image”, the latter’s breathy sighs making for a bracing intimacy.
