The Darkness Essentials

The Darkness are an unguilty pleasure: a gloriously cocky 2000s hard-rock band with a love of flash and pizzazz to rival role models Queen. Their million-selling 2003 debut album, Permission to Land, is stuffed with Thin Lizzy-style twin guitar solos (“Growing on Me”), riffs that demand their own wall of Marshall amps (“I Believe in a Thing Called Love”), and the shrieking falsetto of perpetually catsuited frontman Justin Hawkins. In true rock-legend style, the band found success hard to navigate, and they split in 2006, citing rehab and personal issues, but they re-formed five years later and picked up exactly where they left off.
