Terry Callier Essentials

Terry Callier began his career in the early '60s, singing in Chicago doo-wop groups and recording for Chess Records. Folk music informed his 1968 debut, but by the early '70s Callier was blending his poignant songwriting with soul, psych and jazz on beautifully wrought LPs like Occasional Rain and What Color Is Love. He retired in 1983 to focus on family and education, but returned in 1998 with Timepeace. Over the years, he's collaborated with artists like Massive Attack, Beth Orton and Paul Weller. Callier died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 67.
