Mixing R&B and hip-hop with a dash of idiosyncratic indie pop, Tank and the Bangas became one of the most unique bands to emerge from New Orleans in the early 2010s. Their members met at an open mic in 2011, and they recorded a DIY debut, Think Tank, two years later that placed supple grooves beneath Tarriona “Tank” Ball’s elaborate and multidimensional lyrical flow. The band were subsequently signed by Verve Records, who released the 2019 follow-up, Green Balloon. The album boosted the group’s profile exponentially, earning Tank and the Bangas a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and serving notice that some vital new voices had arrived.
