Steve Winwood Essentials

When Steve Winwood joined the Spencer Davis Group in 1963, word got around about a 15-year-old kid who played keyboards and sang like Ray Charles. That voice fuelled a string of hit singles, but at 19 Winwood got restless and formed the progressive band Traffic. Between stints with that band he joined Eric Clapton in the short-lived supergroup Blind Faith. The '80s gave Winwood a slicker image with beer commercials and the glossier Back in the High Life. But his work in the '00s has returned to his free-flowing Traffic roots, plus a reunion with Clapton.
