Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow, and Adrian Utley defined trip-hop with their 1994 debut, Dummy, dripping mystery-movie keys and melancholic soul vocals over dusty hip-hop loops. Subsequent albums ushered in a more sinister, gothic approach to the Bristolian trio's haunting sound. Their '90s hits, like "Sour Times" and "Over," are equal parts film noir soundtrack, smoky torch song, and rap groove. An electrifying current runs between these and later explorations in electronic neo-folk (2008's "The Rip") and jerky, vocal-driven minimal wave (2010's "Chase the Tear").
