Kishi Bashi Essentials

Spellbinding for its scope, originality, and immediacy, the music Kaoru Ishibashi makes as Kishi Bashi is remarkable in many ways. After studying film scoring at Berklee College and performing as a violinist for Regina Spektor and of Montreal, the Seattle-born singer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer made his debut as Kishi Bashi with 2012’s 151A, a vivid introduction to his blend of chamber pop, indie folk, neo-psychedelia, and electronic soundscapes. With later songs like “Marigolds” from 2019’s Omoiyari, Ishibashi expanded his ambitions without sacrificing his music’s ability to move, surprise, and delight.
