King Tee Essentials

Roger McBride, a.k.a. King Tee/King T, is an essential figure in the history of West Coast rap. Though the MC, born in Compton in 1968, was celebrated for pioneering the G-funk sound on ‘90s classics like his release at the top of that decade, At Your Own Risk, and 1993’s Tha Triflin’ Album, it’s easiest to measure his influence in the artists he inspired. He was a close collaborator of Ice T and mentored the group The Alkaholiks. The Notorious B.I.G. counted Tee as one of his favourite MCs, often citing him as a chief influence, despite his West Coast origins. The rapper also became a close collaborator of Dr. Dre, recruiting him for his 2002 opus, Thy Kingdom Come, which was remastered and reissued in 2023.
