Khatia Buniatishvili made a charged impression with her debut album, displaying potent technique and daring interpretive chops in a collection of works by Liszt. By occasionally rushing individual phrases, she made climactic cadences register even more strongly. But the Georgian pianist has proven herself capable of a gentler approach as well. On complex contemporary works, she can switch up the expected script again, treating them with a soft, folk-like touch. That kind of imagination has earned her a reputation for dextrous, surprising pianism.
