Whether she’s creating her own music or tackling stereotypes about women in the music industry, singer-songwriter Janie Bay finds comfort in subverting expectations. “I decided to create songs in my own way,” she tells Apple Music, “which often meant going against the grain of the particular ‘sound’ that has existed in the Afrikaans industry for many years. Pioneering a fresh sound within a kind of conservative genre is a gradual climb, but I have always believed in doing things in your own unique way. You have to have patience and trust the process.” For Visionary Women, she’s chosen to celebrate those who’ve had an impact on her from a young age, with picks ranging from The Ronettes and Mango Groove to Shekhinah, Taylor Swift, Roxette and Britney Spears. “I think the golden thread is authenticity,” she explains. “I have personally drawn from these women from a young age up until now and applied it to my own songs and career.”
