The Friendly Fires sonic experience is an overwhelming surge of aspirational ‘10s synth-pop, goosed up by chattering percussion—cowbells and congas particularly—and sharp funk guitar. “Paris” and “Jump In the Pool” are jittery flashbacks to a million beach parties, the global Esperanto of disco and samba under the parasol of a very British pop sensibility. “Skeleton Boy” and “Photobooth” push further into robotic funk, played with the cold serrated edges of post-punk, while “Hurting” makes yearning soul out of dreamy early-‘80s electro.
