The massive worldwide demonstrations that sprung from the tragic killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police spurred an awareness, and re-examination, of the Black experience unseen since the civil rights era. The call of the cause—#BlackLivesMatter—would go on to be embraced by people the world over disgusted by the treatment of Black people in America and abroad. Launched on Juneteenth, the celebration marking the effective end of slavery in the United States, the Freedom playlist is a reflection of this energy, a collection of songs from a disparate group of artists chronicling the moment. From voices better known for setting off the party (T-Pain, DaBaby, Trey Songz) to those we’ve come to count on in addressing the issues of the day (Run The Jewels, Meek Mill, T.I.), the Freedom playlist finds our faves united under a singular, unavoidable and extremely necessary declaration: Black Lives Matter.
