After conquering the pop charts with luscious New Wave as part of the duo Savage Garden, Aussie singer Darren Hayes went it alone. Not content with staying in his former band's lane of pillowy romanticism, Hayes dug deeper on his solo records: his 2003 album The Tension and the Spark shrouded his brooding lyrics in heavy electronics, while 2007's This Delicate Thing We've Made was a sprawling double album that dabbled in synth experimentation. He may cast his conceptual net wide, but Hayes' independent spirit and sinewy voice have given his body of work a compelling through-line.
