Bonnie "Prince" Billy Essentials

Bonnie "Prince" Billy Essentials

A product of the same late-'80s Louisville post-hardcore scene that spawned noise-rock titans Slint, Will Oldham spun off in the opposite direction, en route to becoming America's foremost backwoods-folk mystic. Through the '90s, he recorded under various permutations of the Palace moniker, producing creaky country-rock ballads like “New Partner” that channel Neil Young at his Tonight's the Night wobbliest. But since 1999, Oldham has claimed the Bonnie "Prince" Billy alias, trading grit for grace on understated stunners like “I See a Darkness” and broadening his palette with sweeping cinematic strings on the bluesy strut “Cursed Sleep.”
