About Joseph Spence
A remarkable man of endless good cheer, guitarist Joseph Spence was discovered in the Bahamas by musicologist Samuel Charters in 1958. Nearly 50 at the time, he began recording in earnest. His unique sound is marked by his percussive calypso/blues/folk guitar style and his unique guttural voice, which sounds like a cross between Captain Beefheart and Blind Willie McTell. His idiosyncratic music has been enormously influential to many blues, gospel, and folk artists.
