Machine Head

Deep Purple’s sixth album is a work of supreme confidence. The band venomously attack a hugely accomplished set of songs, playing with supple muscularity and drive, particularly on the high-velocity hard rock of “Highway Star” and “Pictures of Home”—both wild night-rides. There’s strutting funk on “Maybe I’m a Leo” and “Never Before,” stormy blues on “Lazy,” and slow and grindingly heavy riffs on “Space Truckin’” and “Smoke on the Water,” played with such salacious glee they become demonic groovers.
