For our Apple Music Home Session series—in which we ask artists to record stripped-back versions of their biggest hits, alongside a cover of one of their favourite songs—Ghanaian Afro-fusion singer-songwriter King Promise revisits some of his most relatable love joints: “Slow Down”, “How Dare You” and “10 Toes”, from his 2022 album, 5 Star. “I have a personal connection with these records,” he tells Apple Music. “They’re my truth, and I feel like a lot of people relate to them. I love the rawness of [these versions]—where I’m not singing it for people to dance, but for people to listen and feel. I love that.” The process allowed him to reflect on his journey (“For me, growth is constant, and any music I put out is my truth,” he explains) and pay homage to some of his biggest inspirations with a cover of Ghanaian hiplife duo R2Bees’ “Slow Down”. “It’s one of those records that inspired me to become an artist,” King Promise (Gregory Bortey Newman) explains. “I remember I always wanted to make a record like that, and R2Bees set the blueprint for local Ghanaian boys like me to think global—so this one is special.”
