Selects: Björk

Björk is one of the most singular musicians and performers of the last 30 years. And her DJ sets—which are as wide-ranging as they are infrequent—are a window into what inspires her to make such revolutionary art. Her exclusive Selects playlist—in which producers and DJs share their favourite tracks of any given moment—is made up primarily of tracks she played at a recent release party for Fossora, her 10th album. "I think the theme of this set list was very much a handshake to the wonderful Sega Bodega and Shygirl, since I was DJing with them and knew they were going to premiere their remix of my song that evening,” Björk tells Apple Music. “So as a thank-you, I collected rhythms around the world that had the optimism, fertility and energy they give me with their music. I tried to edit together the rudeness of Shygirl, cupcakKe and Quay Dash so their voices would gently punch each other. And on the rhythm front, I tried to unite and blur the differences between Tanzanian, Brazil or Comoro rhythms. Most of all, my DJ sets try to express unfathomable admiration for music—a devotional tool for me.” Read on for more of Björk’s commentary on her Selects, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library. Zaza, “Nduzangou” “Zaza is from Comoro, an archipelago situated between Madagascar and Tanzania. This is one of my all-time favourite songs. I love the melody and the scale she's singing in, and the irregular and stubborn rhythm—the emotion is a celebration with full abandonment. Her voice is absolutely sublime and all the parts of the song are too! The first half is already so epic and then it builds into this divine syncopated second half—unexpected but marvelous!” Bamba Pana, “Linga Linga (feat. Makaveli)” “I listened to this Tanzanian artist through all of COVID and it absolutely saved my life. I heard from my friend Kas in Gabber Modus Operandi that they make all their music with one small machine—beats, all of it, no mixing. And when they play live, it is absolutely mind-blowing how much energy they generously project in their compositions.” DJ Cabelinho de Caxias and mc jhenny, “Esse É Meu Marrento” “It was so exciting to go to Rio de Janeiro and hear 2022 baile funk in the taxi (I would like to thank the taxi driver for all the songs I Shazamed). Last time I was in Rio it was around the birth of baile funk, so it was exciting to hear both more women in it and more digital sounds, but without losing any of its rudeness! I admire how few sounds there are and so much identity and DNA expressed. Mind-blowing.” Shygirl & slowthai, “BDE” “This song has been on non-stop in my stereo since it came out. Everything is perfect about it: the singing, the rapping, the production so streamlined and slick in its rude punch. Absolutely obsessed!”
