About Now Generation

One of the great unsung bands (or session teams) in the history of Jamaican music. Led by Geoffrey Chung on keyboards, the band included Mikey Chung on lead guitar, Val Douglas on bass, Mikey ‘Boo’ Richards on drums, Robert Lynn on keyboards and Earl Lindo on organ. They worked on sessions for all the top producers in the early 70s, including Derrick Harriott, Herman Chin-Loy, Ken Khouri, Sonia Pottinger, Joe Gibbs and some of the late Duke Reid’s reggae recordings. Their music was ‘uptown’ and soul-influenced (they covered many soul classics), but they proved that they could provide raw roots records too - Glen Brown’s better work, or Herman’s ‘Aquarius Dub’ being notable examples. Their tightness and all-round panache distinguished them from other session bands at the time, but they have never, sadly, been quite as celebrated as other less skilful outfits - perhaps owing to a lack of show and stage work. They certainly deserve much wider recognition.
