Before he was weaving dreams as a solo hitmaker, American singer/organist Gary Wright cut his teeth from 1967 to 1974 with this British blues-rock crew. With Wright flanked by fellow vocalist/ivory-tickler Mike Harrison, Spooky Tooth led with a double-keyboard attack that added a churchly aura to growling romps like “Sunshine Help Me” and pushed riff-powered struts like “Better By You, Better Than Me” into proggy terrain. But just as they could elevate grit to grandeur, Spooky Tooth could also mash diamonds into coal: Their version of “I Am the Walrus” strips down The Beatles' psychedelic classic into a dirty soul grind.
