South Africa Honours Black Music

This year, in honour of Black Music Month, we’re exploring the undeniable impact of Black music and musicians around the world. South African musicians have contributed to the world's Black sonic landscape for decades, from the country's most prominent jazz legends sharing stages with their peers between the United States and Europe in exile, to house, amapiano and R&B crossing the same borders as their musical predecessors in a “new” South Africa. This collection of songs marks some of the biggest and most promising artists the country has seen, from Nasty C's “Black and White”, an illustration of his sturdy takeover in the US, to Focalistic's Pan-African crossover success via “Ke Star”. This playlist contains not only songs that represent South Africa's rich musical history, but songs that cascade beyond age and taste; every genre featured has been modified, perfected or inspired by what came before. Dive into our Black Music Month playlist, and if you hear something you like, save it to your library.
