Röyksopp Essentials

This Norwegian duo broke out in 2001 by playfully joining unusual springy beats with swirly electronic textures, no doubt influenced by the ethereal northern lights of their homeland. Since then, they've folded in bits of synth-pop, house and Italo disco, but the essence of Röyksopp's sound lies in the way they mix whimsical melodies with weighty moods—the wistful flicker of "Poor Leno" is carefree and downcast all at once, and "Skulls" shuffles while it broods. Their smart taste in guest vocalists like Erlend Øye and Robyn also helps channel their quirks into catharsis.
