From the Cruz Vermelha district of Cascais, Luso-Mozambican rapper Plutónio first grabbed the mic in 2000. He hopped on a series of collab mixtapes before opening for his hero Chullage in 2012 and dropping his debut album, Histórias da Minha Life, a year later. Crisp, brooding beats form a solid layer for the rapper to trace his roots as well as reach for the sky. He eviscerates the twin spectres of corruption and crime with acidic flow. And these salvos are served alongside achingly melodic R&B cuts that shine all the brighter for Plutónio’s gift for juxtaposing hurt with hope.
