With ruminative yet intensely humane melodies carried by his warm, gravelly vocals, Paolo Vallesi emerged from 1991’s Sanremo festival as one of the most promising pop voices of his generation. “Le persone inutili”, much like 1992’s “La Forza Della Vita”, reveals an astute, big-hearted observer recounting poignant vignettes of daily life. These nostalgic notes are as evident in his stirring ballads as they are in the synth-hued, funky sway of his 1994 hit LP Non mi tradire or 1999’s rockier Sabato 17:45. While new material became sparser over the years, Vallesi’s emotional resonance and melodic centre still endure.
