Melodic, gritty and anxious, Fontaines D.C. give off a DIY vibe that reaches back to the birth of post-punk. The guitars slash like razor wire, the drums pound like pistons and singer Grian Chatten is as nihilistic and monotone as he is clever and poetic. The band hail from Dublin, and that’s central to their sound and evolution. Crank just about any tune in their catalogue, whether it’s their 2018 debut single “Liberty Belle” or the wiry breakout hit “A Hero’s Death”, and the mind can’t help but form romantic images of dingy Irish pubs packed with disaffected youth all manically nodding their heads to Fontaines D.C.’s odes to alienation.
