Nestled in the Tuscan countryside, Montepulciano may not be an obvious breeding ground for sweeping indie rock. But that’s precisely Baustelle’s stock-in-trade. Since 2000, they’ve crafted a sound inspired by Scott Walker’s atmospheric edge and Television’s jangling guitars, adding soaring sonic panoramas in the mode of great Italian cinematic exports like Ennio Morricone and Angelo Badalamenti. The results are especially thrilling on cuts such as “Un Romantico a Milano”, the soft and uplifting “Il vangelo di Giovanni” and pulsating rocker “Charlie Fa Surf”.
