We’re so used to hearing a solo violin soaring over the orchestra in Vivaldi that it’s a lovely change to have a cello nestling among them. Ophélie Gaillard and her Pulcinella Orchestra have put together a terrific, and varied, programme with great contrast, complete with a couple of classy vocal appearances (Lucile Richardot and Delphine Galou in top form). Gaillard’s buoyant cello playing is beautifully matched by her colleagues whether alongside other soloists—as in the delicious concerto for cello and bassoon, and the enchanting one for two cellos and two violins—or just with the ensemble players. Pure delight.
