Labyrinth

Labyrinth

Pianist David Greilsammer invites his listeners to wander from the beaten path in this extraordinary mix of styles and musical periods, each piece providing a connecting door or hidden path to the next. Our adventure begins and ends with two mystical composers, Janáček and Scriabin, while Lully entices us on our journey. Beethoven bagatelles surround Crumb’s glistening soundscapes, while the first movement of Bach’s The Art of Fugue feels timeless, flanked by the dizzying, modernist company of Ligeti. At the centre of Greilsammer’s musical maze lies “El amor y la muerte” (“Love and Death”) from Granados’ Goyescas—a work of searing emotional intensity from which the album continues to sprawl and spill, uniting Ofer Pelz with Marin Marais, Erik Satie with C.P.E. Bach. A programme of unexpected twists and turns, magically played.
