The New Berlin

The New Berlin

Though it's long been known as a capital of European techno, Berlin is also Germany's most vital staging ground for Deutschrap, where German MCs convene, collaborate, record and battle—often as part of Rap am Mittwoch, a cypher and local institution since the late '90s. Much of the scene's vibrance stems from the city's diversity and now famous immigrant enclaves—from Wedding to Kreuzberg to Neukölln—many of which are represented here by generations of artists unafraid to find voice in American-style trap, gritty street rap and dancehall-indebted crossover work. Our editors regularly update this—if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
