Sylvie Vartan: Influences

Sylvie Vartan: Influences

Sylvie Vartan was an icon of the '60s yé-yé scene, with songs that took the hip-swivelling, jukebox-shaking sounds of Chubby Checker and the sweet girl-group pop of The Supremes and gave them a coquettish French twist. But in her later years, she's displayed a rich, resonant voice and expressive storytelling that point to roots beyond the early rock ‘n' roll canon, be it the dramatic ballads of Jacques Brel or the cabaret classics of Edith Piaf.
