Shy FX Essentials

Since the early ‘90s, Shy FX has brought authentic reggae vibes—his grandfather was Count Shelly, a pioneering London sound-system operator—to UK dance music. He masterminded the hybrid sound of ragga-jungle on 1994's “Original Nuttah”, fusing UK Apache's gruff chat with tearing breakbeats and digi-dub bass; he shows off his mixing-desk skills on songs like “Soon Come”, a summery slice of ‘70s-inspired reggae. A world away from his triple-time floor-fillers, 2017's “Chocolate” shows off his versatility, lacing 21st-century trap beats with cawing crows, ticking clocks and Roses Gabor's silky, soulful vocals.
