Mahavishnu Orchestra Essentials

If any jazz band could astound and dazzle a rock audience in the early-to-mid '70s, the Mahavishnu Orchestra was it. Guitarist and leader John McLaughlin had played some psychedelic and blues rock in England in the late '60s before joining Miles Davis on the seminal fusion album Bitches Brew. Soon afterward he became a devotee of the guru Sri Chinmoy, who set his music on a new spiritual path. His fellow players, including drummer Billy Cobham and keyboardist Jan Hammer, could all match McLaughlin's energy, and the short-lived Orchestra is remembered for its intense, exhausting shows.
