Krautrock Essentials

In the late ‘60s, young Germans sought to distance themselves from the country’s dark, not-too-distant past by forging the sound of the future. Krautrock was an outgrowth of the hippie movement—reflected in the wild guitar jams of Amon Düül II—but it swiftly diverged from the Woodstock era’s back-to-nature ethos to embrace technological experimentation. Its sonic terrain is vast, spanning the motorik thrust of Can and Neu! and the glacial synthscapes of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. But by emphasising texture and hypnotic repetition, these artists formed the missing link between the psychedelic rock of yore and the electronic music of today.
