Fever Ray Essentials

Karin Dreijer’s Fever Ray project unites futuristic club rhythms with gothic overtones and an unmistakably political edge. When Fever Ray’s self-titled debut album dropped in 2009, Dreijer, born in Sweden in 1975, was already well known for their work in The Knife, a long-running collaboration with their sibling, Olof. Fever Ray clearly came from the same universe that had produced The Knife’s eerie Silent Shout, but while The Knife switched up its style with each subsequent release, Dreijer pushed ever deeper into a singular universe of adrenaline-fueled beats and synthesised grandeur. Dreijer would be the first to admit the didactic nature of their work. First, the lush atmospheres draw listeners close, and then, their pointed lyrics—emphasising queer identity, community building and liberation—introduce the real goal—building a radically inclusive utopia free of prejudice or oppression.
