Boney M. Essentials

Boney M. Essentials

The fun, fanciful sound of Boney M., combining disco, pop and reggae elements, captivated Europe in the ’70s and earned the international vocal group a string of massive hits. It all started with German producer/songwriter Frank Farian’s 1975 single “Baby Do You Wanna Bump”: released under the name Boney M., it took off, and he assembled Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett, Maizie Williams and Bobby Farrell to be a touring group (only Mitchell and Barrett actually sang on any Boney M. recordings). From the 1976 debut LP Take the Heat Off Me onward, their albums exploded across Europe, and singles like 1978’s disco-reggae update of “Rivers of Babylon”, “Rasputin” and the danceable Christmas medley “Mary’s Boy Child/Oh My Lord” were continental dominators. They split in 1986, and for decades to come, the appearance of variously constituted reunions spoke to the public’s unending love of the group.
